1. To Kill A Mockingbird

The Great Depression is depicted in the fictional Alabama community of Maycomb in this story. The protagonist is Jean Louise (“Scout”) Finch, a bright and outspoken young lady who changes in age from six to nine during the story. Atticus Finch, a well-known attorney who is widowed, raises her and her brother Jem and instils in them the values of compassion and justice.

Despite threats from the neighbourhood, Atticus decides to represent Tom Robinson, a Black man, after he is wrongly accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman. Tom is found guilty despite Atticus’s powerful argument, and he subsequently dies trying to elude capture. Atticus’s remark to his children that it is “a sin to murder a sparrow” is echoed when a character compares his demise to “the needless slaughter of songbirds.”

For its compassionate handling of a young child’s introduction to racism and prejudice in the American South, To Kill a Mockingbird received high praise. It was extremely well-known, having been translated into almost 40 languages, and sold more than 30 million copies globally.

“Half-Girlfriend is a unique Indian story, where boys and girls are not clear about their relationship status with each other. A boy may think he is more than friends with the girl, but the girl is still not his girlfriend. Hence, I thought we needed a term like ‘Half girlfriend. Because, in India, that is what most men get.

3. Woman & Power: A Manifesto

Finally, Mary Beard addresses in one courageous book the misogynists and trolls who relentlessly harass and denigrate women worldwide, frequently even Mary herself. In Women & Power, she explores the traps of gender and the ways that strong women have been treated unfairly throughout history, tracing the history of this misogyny back to its primordial beginnings.

Beard demonstrates that women have been barred from civic leadership positions dating back to Homer’s Odyssey because public discourse is traditionally associated with men. Beard draws fascinating connections between our cultural presumptions about women’s approach to power, comparing Medusa to Philomela and how strong women serve as crucial role models for all women who must fight against being forced into a male figure.

Beard poses the question: Isn’t it power itself that needs to be redefined if women aren’t seen as being part of the power structure? while reflecting on her own online experiences with sexism. How long do we have to wait until that happens?

A Thousand Splendid Sun

From the views of two women, the narrative spans three decades of anti-Soviet struggle, civil war, and Taliban rule. Mariam, the disdained illegitimate daughter of a prosperous businessman, is coerced into marriage at the age of fifteen by Rasheed, who becomes progressively violent when she is unable to have children.

After his parents are killed by rocket fire eighteen years later, Rasheed marries Laila, a fourteen-year-old girl with intelligence and spirit, who has no other choice except to become a prostitute or go hungry. Rasheed, whose use of violence is sanctioned by law and custom, is opposed by Mariam and Laila, who join forces with them.

The author paints a compelling picture of dictatorship in which women are reliant on their husbands, fathers, and especially their sons, and that having male children is the only way for them to achieve social acceptance.

In the end, each woman must embrace a path that will never be entirely joyful for them: Mariam will have to give up her life to save Laila when she kills their husband, and Laila, despite marrying her childhood sweetheart, must find a way to prevent Mariam’s sacrifice from being made in vain.
